- PSI 2.3 / July 5, 1992
-
- Personal System for Information Management and Retrieval
-
-
- Since 1989, PSI (pronounced “psee”) has had a small but enthusia-
- stic user community - and now there is PSI version 2.3. This ver-
- sion has been improved in various ways, from a slicker interface
- to additional features such as hierarchical descriptors and more
- powerful retrieval.
-
- But PSI is still a handy system for the management and retrieval
- of your personal data, be it addresses, CD collections, or biblio-
- graphic references. It is intended for the non-commercial user.
- It may not be as full-fledged as some data-base systems, but has
- many features that you won’t find in most commercial systems. Also,
- you may find it easier to set up and faster to use, especially once
- you grasped the idea. (Try the sample sessions!) PSI is comparably
- small, versatile, and useful for a broad range of data. Indexing
- with descriptors makes searching for the data you need fast, and
- the interface to other data-base formats (import and export) is
- quite powerful.
-
- PSI is shareware. Give it a try - and if you decide to use it,
- please register and send $20 to one of the addresses given in the
- documentation. (Site-license rates are available.) Feel free to
- copy PSI and give it to other Macintosh users. Always include the
- original documents.
- With the unregistered version, you cannot add cards to files with
- 30 or more cards. With your registration, you get an upgrade by
- e-mail.
-
- * Documentation with introductions and sample sessions as well as
- context-sensitive on-line help are available. (“About PSI” is the
- main documentation; “PSI Help” contains the on-line help.)
- Several examples and templates accompany the application to give
- you an idea about the possibilities of PSI.
-
- * Changes since version 2.2:
- - The find selection dialog can show either the first or the first
- two field values of the found cards.
- - File manipulation is now in menu “File” for both PSI and text files.
- - The import of numbers is done correctly.
- - PSI needs less run-time memory.
- * Changes since version 2.0:
- - Windows adapt better to small screens.
- - The “Fonts” menu shows the font of the active text window.
- - Export procedures can define font information (type, size and face).
- - The export/import definition window allows for long procedures
- * Some changes since version 1.0:
- - Descriptors can be grouped.
- - Retrieval can be controlled with connectives AND, OR and NOT.
- - Export and import procedures can be switched via menus.
- - Card-to-card references (links) are supported (HyperPSI?).
- - Color is used to highlight text.
- - New examples, sample sessions and templates are provided.
-
- PSI is not 32-bit clean.
- Your Mac should have at least 2MB of main memory. (If only 1MB is available,
- PSI may still run under System 6 without MultiFinder.)
-
- If you have questions, send me e- or p-mail.
- I will not answer to phone calls.
